Dynamiq recently completed the non-linear finite element analysis of a novel polymer kerbstone manufactured from an advanced composite material largely comprised of reprocessed polymers otherwise destined for landfill sites. The extreme lightness of this product is achieved through a combination of this highly informed material selection and a meticulous design using extensive non-linear FEA.
A cellular and ribbed construction was optimised to further lighten the product whilst maintaining the necessary bending and crush strength. Detailed simulations were conducted to ensure the bending strength requirements of BS/EN 1340 were met with comfortable margins prior to committing to tooling manufacture and physical testing.
